Synthetic curcumin, a bright yellowish chemical produced by plants of the Curcuma longa group, is the main curcumin constituent of turmeric. It’s sold as an herb supplement, cosmetic ingredient, spice, and food color. The chemical compound has been shown to have antioxidant activity in laboratory cultures, and this action may help prevent cancer and cardiovascular disease. Several studies have shown that curcumin reduces cholesterol and prevents type 2 diabetes. It appears to protect cardiovascular tissue from development of hardening and atherosclerosis.

The researchers showed that synthetic curcumin can prevent the formation of abnormal plaques that are characteristic of CAD. This is exciting because not only is curcumin an anti-inflammatory, it also has a powerful anti-oxidant effect. The formation of these plaques is believed to be the underlying cause of some of the more serious conditions such as atherosclerosis, thromboembolism, and stroke. Curcumin may therefore be used as an anti-CAD supplement as soon as the groundwork for its use in humans is completed. As additional research continues to unravel the health properties of curcumin, we will learn if the benefits of this natural herb can be applied directly to the heart and circulatory system to improve both circulation and overall health.
